The large island of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean Sea is a unique and exeptionally beautiful region in South Europe with many popular tourist resorts.
Crete offers a wide variety of naturalistic environments a landscape with beautiful coastlines, fantastic beaches, forests, lakes, countless gorges and high mountain ranges.
The island has a rich history dating back several thousands of years. Crete has been the birth place of the oldest civilization of Europe and it has been influenced by many cultures over many centuries.
There are to be found hundreds of ruins and archaeological sites dating back from the ancient Minoan, the Hellenic-Roman and Venetian times.
Crete has 4 prefectures: Chania (West Crete), Rethymnon (Mid-West Crete), Heraklion (Mid-East Crete) and Lasithi (East Crete).
The capitals of the prefectures Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos are the biggest towns / cities of Crete, offering all the amenities of a modern town, and there are many picturesque and traditional villages to be found all over the island.
Agios Nikolaos, located at the coast of the Gulf of Mirabello, is probably the nicest and most popular town of Crete. Close to Agios Nikolaos (10 km) is the elite tourist resort of Elounda where many 5-6 stars hotels are located.
Crete has 3 international airports, one in Chania, one in Heraklion and one in Sitia.
Crete's dry, mild climate is one of the best in Europe with moderate temperatures throughout the whole year and plenty of sunshine.
Many property investors take advantage of the excellent prices of properties in Crete which now, due to the recession, are as low as they were 10 years ago and seemingly have reached their lowest possible level.
Some properties also offer guaranteed rental income.
Crete is still a very young market and there are excellent returns to be made as foreigners have only been able to buy property in Greece since the early 90s.
