Porto de Galinhas is one of the most famous beaches of northeast Brazil, located in the town of Ipojuca, in the Pernambuco region. Its fame derives mainly from its natural charms with pools of warm, crystal clear water left in the coral reef, and miles of white sandy beaches dotted with coconut palms. Originally the beach was called Porto Rico, and its 'pau brasil' wood was the main product sold. The port was also one of the major trading posts for the illegal slave trade of the northeast in the time of slavery, and often the slaves were hidden under chicken coops. When a slave ship brought its illegal cargo into port its arrival was announced with the phrase 'there are new chickens in the port!' This is how the beach of Porto Rico got the name Porto de Galinhas (Port of Chickens). The entire region is very popular with tourists and surfers from all over the world, who come to admire its natural charms.
